VDB Reaches the Plus Tier in Shopify's Partner Program

By Elliot Atlas, CTO and COO at VDB
Shopify moved VDB into the Plus tier of its partner program this quarter. Normally, I'd hesitate to write a whole article about a badge. The industry has no shortage of logos on agency websites that mean somebody attended a webinar. This one works differently, and the difference is worth explaining, because it changes how a jeweler should read it when evaluating who builds their store.
The tier Shopify calls Plus Partner is the third of five levels in its partner program, above Registered and Select, and Shopify describes it as delivering impact across more complex merchant needs. It cannot be applied for or purchased. Shopify assigns it quarterly, based on commercial results it verifies against its own records.
What Shopify Plus Partner Status Actually Measures
Here's the part most announcements skip: the tier has published numeric requirements, and Shopify attributes the numbers itself. Per Shopify's Q3 2026 tiering guide, a partner reaches the Plus tier through one of two revenue dimensions over a trailing five-year window: at least $500,000 in Shopify-attributed revenue from merchants the partner brings to the platform, or at least $2.5 million from merchants the partner actively supports.
To be clear about what those numbers are: this is revenue as Shopify attributes it based on verified partner involvement, subject to Shopify's own validation. Not the partner's revenue or client sales figures.
On top of the revenue dimension, the tier requires having brought Shopify at least two Plus or Enterprise merchants, or forty standard-plan merchants. Tiers update every quarter. Fall below the bar, and the tier goes away.
So the badge is a data-verified result. Shopify checked the numbers on its side and confirmed sustained commercial impact at a level most agencies never reach.
How We Got Here
Nobody at VDB set out to collect a tier. The status is a byproduct of the work: Plus-level store builds, replatforming projects, and this past year, a run of Scripts-to-Functions migrations completed before Shopify Scripts stopped executing on June 30, 2026. That cutoff was a real test. Checkout logic for discounts, shipping rules, and payment handling had to be rebuilt in Shopify Functions before Scripts stopped running, and stores that missed it lost that logic outright. Ours didn't.
And that work compounds. Every custom ring configurator, every certification-aware checkout flow, every wholesale pricing structure we build makes the next one faster and sharper. Shopify's tier math happens to be a decent proxy for exactly that accumulation.
The Part No Badge Can Verify
Plenty of capable Plus-tier agencies exist. Shopify's directory lists them. What the tier cannot tell you is whether a partner understands your catalog.
Jewelry is a genuinely awkward fit for a stock e-commerce data model. A diamond is not a t-shirt with size variants. It's a one-of-one item defined by cut, color, clarity, carat weight, fluorescence, and a certification number that has to follow it through listing, sale, insurance, and shipping. Custom and bridal orders close on deposits, with balances due at delivery. Wholesale buyers expect memo terms and tiered trade pricing that would confuse a consumer checkout. A generalist agency meets these problems for the first time on your project, on your budget.
We don't, because this is the software we build every day. VDB runs a trade marketplace where supplier inventory feeds arrive in every imaginable format and are normalized into structured gemological data. Our Ring Creator handles the configurable-product problem, real stones paired with settings and rendered accurately, that most agencies would quote as a six-month custom build. That knowledge doesn't stay in our products. It walks straight into every Shopify project we scope.
One sentence for the skimmers: the Plus tier is Shopify's own confirmation of sustained, verified commercial impact, and more than a decade in the diamond and jewelry trade means we already speak your catalog's language when we show up.
What This Changes for Jewelers Evaluating Partners
If you're a retailer, supplier, or manufacturer weighing a Shopify build or a move to Plus, the practical takeaway is a short checklist:
- Check the tier. It's Shopify's own verified read on a partner's delivered commercial impact, and it's harder to fake than a case study page.
- Then check the domain. Ask how they'd model certification data, structure a deposit flow for custom orders, or handle memo terms. Watch how fast the answer comes.
- Ask what they shipped before Shopify Scripts stopped executing on June 30. Partners who migrated real clients to Functions in time have a working, tested checkout experience. Partners who didn't are starting from the documentation.
The tier tells you a partner can deliver at this level, verified against Shopify's own numbers. The trade knowledge tells you they already know what a GIA report number needs to do inside your data model. It took us more than ten years in this industry and a verified track record on Shopify's books to offer both from one team, and as far as we can tell, that combination is still rare enough to be worth writing about.
